Top Tips to becoming a Greener School

Climate change and the threats to our environment present us all with the greatest challenge to our lives and to the lives of future generations. Rising temperatures are destroying our environment by creating weather extremes, natural disasters and food and water shortages. The ice caps are melting, sea levels are rising and forests are burning. Scientists calculate that global temperatures are over one degree Celsius above pre-industrial levels and rising. Plastic pollutes our oceans and marine life and coral reefs are dying. The eco systems on which all life depends are being destroyed (United Nations, 2025). We need to look after all the resources of nature now so that harmony is restored between people and the planet.

Come and learn about events and activities throughout the school year that children, young people and staff can get involved in which can support teaching and learning of sustainability topics using practical ideas. Also get to know environmental initiatives and organisations every school should be aware of that can empower children and young people to lead campaigns to reduce the school’s carbon footprint and raise and save money for the school in the process. Start taking action towards making a positive difference today!

My new book Published in September 2025 by Bloomsbury, “100 Ideas for Primary Teachers Greener School”, with a Foreword by Dr Jane Goodall DBE (Founder of the Jane Goodall Institute & UN Messenger of Peace) will support Teachers, Trainee Teachers, Leadership Teams, School Staff to start their environmental journey and to carry it on towards Zero Carbon. My book can also be adapted and used by Secondary Schools, Scouts, Girl Guides, Community Groups, Youth Groups and families at home. The 100 ideas are all tried and tested practical activities and projects that I have used in my teaching over the last 13 years. These can be woven through subjects and a school’s curriculum. This handbook supports school staff who can pick up the book and refer to it throughout, giving them continuous support and guidance about what and how they can teach climate change, saving them time and energy.

The book is split up into ten environmental topics to support schools, including those following Foundation for Environmental Education, Eco Schools Green Flag. These topics include Marine Life, Biodiversity, Transport, Energy, Global Citizenship. There is also an essential chapter of six organisations that schools should sign up with before choosing some of the 100 ideas to start implementing in their classrooms and across the school. These organisations can give schools free support and guidance. For each idea, there are “Bonus" and “Taking it Further Ideas” to help pupils lead the way and take their learning forward. Some ideas can be achieved in a short space of time, and others are part of longer projects. Start small, take one activity at a time, and build on your success. Every school will operate within its context, facilities and budget. Even the smallest changes can be positive, and schools can use and adapt each of the 100 ideas depending on available resources. Sustainability in Early Years: A Lifestyle, A Mindset

But when sustainability is proposed—or seen—in a nursery or school, particularly in a fast-growing city like Dubai, it can often be misunderstood. Sustainability sometimes gets reduced to an aesthetic: removing natural colours from the environment, making everything beige, decorating rooms with artificial vines, and covering display boards with hessian fabric. While these visuals may look “eco-friendly,” true sustainability runs much deeper than the décor.

We are no longer in a position to simply recycle—we must now learn to reduce and reuse. Sustainability is not a trend, it is a mindset—a way of life that must be embedded in the hearts and habits of young children from the very beginning.

For me sustainability in the early years rests on four interconnected pillars:

1. Sustainable Culture

Sustainable culture begins with inclusivity. It is about building a community where every individual is respected, accepted, and valued for who they are. When children grow up feeling a deep connection to their family, neighbours, and wider community, they naturally develop empathy and responsibility.

We can nurture sustainable culture by:

Sharing stories from family histories and diverse cultures.
Celebrating traditions, languages, and unique experiences.
Encouraging children to build relationships with people around them.
Embracing pre-loved toys, books, or clothes—each item carrying its own special story.

This rootedness and sense of belonging lays the foundation for a compassionate and resilient generation.

2. Sustainable Environment

Environmental sustainability is about helping children understand that they belong to nature, not separate from it. It is more than just caring for the environment—it is about living with it.

Practical ways to embed this:

Grow herbs, vegetables, or flowers together, even in small spaces.
Compost food scraps and segregate garbage as part of daily routines.
Spend time outdoors connecting with nature through walks, observation, and reflection.
Avoid single-use plastics and creatively reuse materials.
Teach children to treat all living beings—plants, insects, animals—with kindness and care.

The Impact of the Smallest Things

Even something as tiny as the plastic triangle tab on a packet can do significant harm. These tabs are often cut off and discarded. Too small to be sorted correctly, they end up in the environment and are often consumed by birds or animals, leading to injury or death.

A simple act of mindfulness can make a difference. We do not need to cut off the triangle—leaving it intact and disposing of the whole packet properly is safer. Better still, we can avoid such packaging when possible. Teaching children to be aware of even the smallest pieces of waste helps embed responsible habits that protect our planet.

3. Sustainable Education

True education goes beyond academics. Emotional sustainability is just as important—it is about teaching children how to manage their emotions and support their own wellbeing, as well as the wellbeing of others.

Sustainable education should include:

Teaching emotional literacy—helping children name and understand their feelings.
Encouraging mindfulness, empathy, and cooperation.
Learning through storytelling, shared experiences, and nature-based play.
Using open-ended, natural, or recycled materials for learning.
Embedding daily practices that reflect care for the environment and each other.

When we nurture emotionally aware, socially responsible children, we are building the foundation for a sustainable future.

4. Economic Sustainability

Sustainability also includes how we spend and consume. Supporting local economies, using regional products, and reducing unnecessary purchases teaches children about thoughtful consumption.

How we can promote this:

Shop at local markets and involve children in the experience.
Choose local ingredients and explain their origins.
Host swap or donation drives for gently used toys and clothes.
Celebrate stories of meaningful shopping habits from our own childhoods.

I still remember going with my father to a local shop every Sunday morning. We were allowed to choose one treat. That weekly visit wasn’t just about the treat—it was about connecting with our neighbourhood, knowing the people, and building memories that still stay with me today.

Sustainability is a Habit

Sustainability is not something we teach once and move on. It is in the small daily choices we model:

Turning off lights when leaving a room.
Saving water while brushing teeth.
Cooking meals together on “Meatless Mondays.”
Reusing paper for art projects.
Repairing broken toys instead of replacing them.

These everyday practices quietly and powerfully shape lifelong habits in children.

To nurture a generation that thoughtfully considers their actions and their impact, we must cultivate empathy, responsibility, and a strong connection to the environment.

Mindfulness is essential in today’s world—in how we treat one another, how we use our resources, and how we care for the Earth.

Sustainability is not about perfection; it is about making intentional, conscious choices with care and purpose.

Let’s raise children who recognize that every action counts. Every drop of water saved, every bite of food respected, every tiny plastic piece considered, every kind word spoken—these small, everyday acts build not only a better world, but also better human beings.

International schools, with their diverse communities and global perspectives, are uniquely positioned to champion this mission. But to truly prepare students for the challenges of tomorrow, sustainability must be more than a set of isolated activities or annual events—it must be woven into the very fabric of school life. That’s where the whole-school approach to sustainability becomes essential.

What Is a Whole-School Approach to Sustainability? A whole-school approach means sustainability is not confined to a classroom lesson or a recycling bin—it permeates every layer of the school’s ecosystem. This framework encompasses teaching and learning, campus operations, leadership practices, student engagement, and community partnerships.

UNESCO (2020) defines a whole-school sustainability model as one that integrates environmental and social responsibility into curriculum, school culture, resource management, and collaboration with external stakeholders. It transforms schools from passive transmitters of knowledge to active agents of change.

Key Components of the Whole-School Approach

This model fosters a learning environment where sustainability becomes not just an initiative, but a mindset, shaping school culture, pedagogy, and impact.

Why This Matters in International Education: International schools educate future global leaders. These students will inherit a world defined by climate disruption, environmental justice issues, and rapid social transformation. Therefore, the values and skills they develop in school must extend far beyond academic achievement. Organisations like the International Baccalaureate (IB) emphasise global citizenship and environmental stewardship as core to their learner profile. Similarly, the Council of International Schools (CIS) urges member schools to integrate the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into all areas of teaching and leadership (Council of International Schools, 2022).

Furthermore, many international schools are located in regions already experiencing the consequences of climate change—rising temperatures, water shortages, flooding, and pollution. Integrating sustainability is not just about responsibility; it’s about resilience.

Stories of Impact: Real Examples from the Field

Across continents, international schools are successfully implementing this approach:

• Singapore: A school mapped the SDGs across all subjects, culminating in a sustainability exhibition where students presented innovations in clean energy, urban gardening, and zero-waste solutions. The project built cross-disciplinary knowledge and empowered student voice.

• UAE: A K–12 international school transitioned to solar energy, launched composting initiatives, and shifted to eco-conscious suppliers. These operational changes became hands-on learning opportunities in science, business, and design classes.

• Kenya: Students collaborated with a reforestation NGO, planting over 500 trees while studying deforestation’s impact on biodiversity. This experiential learning tied global awareness to local action and led to deeper student engagement.

Such initiatives demonstrate that sustainability, when embedded intentionally, transforms how schools teach, operate, and lead.

Getting Started: A Roadmap for School Leaders

For school leaders ready to move beyond intention into action, here are five practical steps:

1. Conduct a Sustainability Audit: Assess your current environmental, curricular, and operational practices.

2. Establish a Green Leadership Team: Include: students, staff, administrators, and facilities managers to drive the vision forward collaboratively.

3. Align School Mission and Vision: Reflect sustainability and global citizenship in your foundational documents and strategic plans.

4. Invest in Professional Development: Equip educators with the tools and confidence to embed sustainability into lessons meaningfully.

5. Celebrate Progress: Recognize and share milestones with the community to build momentum and pride.

As Hargreaves and Fullan (2012) emphasize, true sustainable change emerges from culture—not one-off programs. A shared vision, consistent effort, and inclusive leadership are key to lasting transformation.

Overcoming Common Challenges

Implementing a whole-school sustainability strategy can be complex. Some of the most common barriers include:

• Budget Limitations: Start with low-cost, high-impact initiatives. Many eco-friendly changes eventually lead to savings.

• Staff Resistance: Offer time, support, and space for dialogue. Make sustainability a shared goal, not a top-down directive.

• Curriculum Overload: Rather than adding content, integrate sustainability into existing subjects through project-based learning.

• Cultural Complexity: Recognise and celebrate diverse perspectives. Sustainability should be inclusive, not prescriptive.

As Sterling (2011) notes, successful sustainability education is not about imposing values—it’s about co-creating understanding and responsibility across cultures and communities.

The Role of Schools in Shaping a Sustainable Future

Schools are not just preparing students for the world—they are shaping the world those students will inherit.

By modeling sustainable practices across operations, instruction, and leadership, schools send a powerful message: You are not just learners—you are changemakers. When students see their school composting food waste, using solar power, discussing climate justice, or supporting local NGOs, they internalize that sustainability is a way of life—not an abstract theory.

“When we started composting, I didn’t think it mattered. But now I show my family how to do it,” shared Leila, a Grade 5 student at a school in Dubai.

These moments, multiplied across school communities around the world, create ripple effects that extend far beyond any single campus.

Moving Forward

If you’re a school leader, ask, where is sustainability reflected in our mission, our classrooms, and our decision-making?

If you’re an educator, ask, how can I empower my students to see themselves as environmental stewards and ethical leaders?

If you’re part of an international school network, ask, how can we elevate sustainability from the margins to the mainstream of global education?

As educators we need to ask three integral questions.

How can we make sustainability a meaningful and relatable concept for our students?

The first promising step is connection. Beginning with self.

The journey of self-exploration and discovery awakens children to their own set of values and belief system. Understanding what matters to them gives them a strong sense of identity needed to express themselves. The transition from following traditions to leading change requires conversation and the freedom to ask questions.

What change do I wish to see in the world today, and why is it important to me? Why do I feel strongly about this issue, and what personal connection do I have to it? How does this problem affect me emotionally? How will I feel once this issue is addressed or resolved? Exercising a personal connection to the global issues is a promising place to start a child’s sustainability journey.

What strategies can we implement to foster long-term student engagement with sustainability?

From the self, the connection must move outwards.

How do I give voice to my emotions, ideals, and concerns for the planet?

Here, finding the right tools to nurture self-expression is key. Art, theater, creative writing, digital media, public speaking, or independent projects all play a vital role in facilitating our children’s creative expression. And creativity lies at the core of problem-solving.

Art has many forms, stories can be told from infinite points of view, and ideas can be interpreted in unique ways. The learning that comes from being immersed in the creative process provides young people with transformative experiences.

The connection here is of exchange. Understanding and embracing one’s own voice while appreciating the voices of others fosters a sense of support and belonging within a larger community. Creative expression not only gives children purpose but also affirms the value of their voices. Sustainability here becomes a deeply personal and actionable part of their education.

How can we track progress and celebrate the impact of our students' contributions to sustainability?

Students who adopt a sustainable development goal that drives their passion for economic, social and environmental justice thrive in institutions that respect their voices, provide resources to nurture them and create opportunities for them to be heard. Ultimately, sustainability becomes more than just a lesson; it becomes a core part of their identity. An identity that they carry with pride and one that ties them to a larger community or movement.

Impact also comes through reflection. Making time for self-improvement helps students learn from their experiences and make informed decisions about their future on Earth. Reflective practices also help children reassess goals, reconnect with their purpose, and recognize the growth that results from small actions and contributions.

While impact can be quantified through data, the shift in mindset and behaviours is the true indicator of lasting change. By equipping students with the tools to express their passion and valuing their contributions, we empower them to flourish as agents of sustainable change in the world.

Conservation Through Character: Positive Psychology for Change

Behavioural science tells us that knowing what’s right doesn’t always translate into doing what’s right. This gap is shaped by three key psychological patterns:

Present Bias: People naturally prioritise immediate rewards over long-term benefits. A flashy new gadget today feels more tangible than reducing carbon footprints for future generations.

Social Norms: We take cues from those around us. If sustainable actions aren’t mainstream, they feel like swimming against the tide. "Why should I bother if no one else seems to care?" Or, for fear of being singled out.

Cognitive Dissonance: We often justify inaction to align with our current habits. "Giving up meat won’t make a difference!" This internal conflict leads people to downplay their individual impact or resist change altogether.

This is where the power of ecoliteracy comes into play. Having a profound understanding of how natural systems work and how human actions impact those systems is a powerful framework to bridge this gap. But in addition to teaching about the world’s complex systems, we need to equip our students with tools so that they can become agents of change. These tools come in the form of character strengths, skills, and dispositions, founded in positive psychology.

There are some easy-to-implement, effective eco-literacy strategies that incorporate behavioural change insights that all educators, no matter their background, can apply with their learners:

• Make sustainable actions the best option. The simpler the action, the more likely people will adopt it. Embedding practical steps within everyday learning, from reducing waste in classrooms to incorporating design thinking and innovation, creates lasting habits.

• Showcase collective action. A sad truth is that people want to follow what others do. Highlighting positive environmental shifts happening locally and globally encourages students to join the movement rather than feel like lone crusaders. Using influence is key—we can see the incredible successes of people like Mr. Beast—we can build this into our classrooms and communities.

• Tie sustainable behaviours to identity. People are more likely to act when their choices align with their values and self-perception. Language plays a key role here. Referring to students as 'caretakers' or 'stewards' reinforces a sense of purpose. When students see themselves as custodians of the planet, their actions become an expression of who they are, not just what they do.

One example of ecoliteracy in action is a campaign we designed to protect sea turtle nesting sites here in Dubai. Faced with the threat of foraging wildlife, pollution, and coastal development, our Year 9 students worked with conservationists and marine biologists directly to devise ways to protect the nesting sites.

Through working in the field, students learned about the nesting habits of endangered turtles. Through fieldwork, they saw turtles firsthand, and that was the catalyst. From that point, they all bought into the project. They were deeply motivated to innovate and create ways to protect the nests. As a result, they became highly influential, sharing their stories with members of the wider community, spreading awareness, and, critically, hope! We know hope is contagious.

The most impactful piece of the work was the way we communicated with the students, referring to them as caretakers and stewards. They began connecting environmental responsibility to their identity as custodians of their coastline. They had always known that we should protect these endangered animals, and they had learned about IUCN Red List the previous year, but until they were directly involved and began to see themselves as stewards of this project, they did not have the emotional connection to the project. Using character to tap into conservation challenges can drive outcomes. We know that this was the case, as we track our students’ willingness to act and knowledge of action possibilities. Our trend over time is unbelievably positive and defies global norms, which anticipate that teens’ hope drops off around the age of 13. This is not the case for our teens.

Incorporating ecoliteracy into education isn’t just about teaching facts; it’s about nurturing values, empathy, and responsibility and allowing students to see environmental responsibility as part of their identity. In turn, we empower them to shape a fairer, more sustainable world…and this is what we need.

Effective ecoliteracy programmes are the key to unlocking the future generations’ ambition, and educators are in the perfect position to make it happen. Learning in classrooms, then taking it into action driven by character strengths and skills.

We know climate change is happening, and therefore, we would assume that world leaders and corporations would take action. Alas, they do not. Despite decades of warnings, global emissions continue to rise. Challenges and Strategic Solutions:

1.Lack of Climate Leadership and Strategic Vision

Many educational institutions take a passive stance on sustainability, often outsourcing reporting and related tasks. However, truly integrating sustainability requires active leadership commitment, a clear and shared roadmap, and dedicated personnel. Appointing roles such as Chief Sustainability Officers, sustainability managers, or Energy Managers can provide the necessary focus and expertise to develop measurable goals and action plans. These professionals are instrumental in driving initiatives, aligning the institution’s vision and mission with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs), and embedding sustainability into organizational assessments and performance metrics.

2. Need for Cross-Departmental Collaboration

Successful sustainability initiatives will need engagement and collaboration across departments, which are often hindered by siloed structures. Establishing a holistic sustainability roadmap that fosters collaboration and commitment across all levels is essential. Setting measurable internal targets encourages accountability and aligns different departments around shared sustainability goals

3. Perceived Financial Constraints In the UAE, sustainability initiatives can mistakenly be viewed as costly additions rather than investments. The initial mindset of high implementation costs can overshadow the long-term operational savings that sustainability provides, such as reduced energy and water consumption and improved health in built environments. Education institutions need clear communication and case studies highlighting long-term financial benefits, reinforcing sustainability as both economically prudent and environmentally responsible.

4. Institutional Cultural Shift Towards Sustainability

Effective sustainability education is intrinsically linked to institutional operational sustainability. Creating a cultural identity centered around sustainability enables students to become empowered sustainability leaders and entrepreneurs. Schools should operate as living labs, integrating student involvement with expert mentorship from staff, parents, and external sustainability professionals. This hands-on approach not only enhances student learning but also solidifies the institution’s commitment to sustainability practices.

5. Limited Funding for Retrofit Projects

Retrofitting existing buildings poses financial and logistical challenges in the UAE. Although funding mechanisms are still emerging, solutions like Cooling-as-a-Service as practiced in Abu Dhabi offer promising avenues to finance energy efficiency improvements, such as Building Management Systems (BMS), upgrading equipment and air balancing. Also, new building codes for existing structures are on the horizon — crucial for improving outdated designs and optimizing Energy Use Intensity (E.U.I.) and Water Use Intensity (W.U.I.) across the region.

6. Compliance and Inspection Challenges

In 2023, the Sharjah Private Education Authority (SPEA) introduced a Sustainability Rating Index for Early Years, encouraging institutions to self-assess and report on their current sustainability practices. This initiative is a positive step toward sparking meaningful conversations around sustainability in early education. To support this effort, more informational webinars and guidance resources on an ongoing basis would help make the process more inclusive and accessible for education stakeholders.

However, some current sustainability efforts still face challenges, particularly when they intersect with regulatory inspection requirements. For example, schools aiming to incorporate outdoor elements like sandpits or natural desert gardens often encounter resistance due to health and safety concerns. To bridge this gap, clear and supportive guidelines on sustainable landscape management are needed. These would empower schools to confidently embrace outdoor learning environments without compromising compliance.

7. Insufficient Teacher Training and Capacity

Though teacher training modules have been made available in some cases, it often takes a lot more time for teachers to be comfortable delivering complex topics like recycling, carbon emissions, and climate science. Continuous Professional Development (CPD) training sessions (approximately 30-40 hours) are necessary to build teacher competence. Moreover, schools should consider outsourcing specialized sustainability training to external experts who can provide focused workshops and curricular support, alleviating pressure on teaching staff.

8. Need for Specialized Sustainability Education

Expertise Sustainability topics are currently restricted primarily to geography and science classes, limiting interdisciplinary engagement. Significant gaps persist in key areas like effective pedagogical methods, planetary boundaries, climate justice, and indigenous ecological knowledge. Dedicated sustainability education experts can bridge this gap by developing extensive multidisciplinary curricula from early years through grade 12, cultivating long-term environmental stewardship as a fundamental life principle.

9. Enhancing Clarity in Climate Change Education

National and international educational boards must clearly define learning outcomes and effective teaching methodologies aligned with UNESCO's Green Curriculum guidelines. Schools need accessible, actionable programs like mangrove planting, beach clean-ups, recycling initiatives, and visits to conservation areas, reinforcing theoretical knowledge with practical community engagement.

In conclusion, addressing these challenges requires a systemic, multi-faceted approach involving dedicated sustainability leadership, cross-sector collaboration, strategic financial planning, regulatory clarity and support, robust teacher training, and comprehensive multidisciplinary curriculum development. As educational institutions in the UAE move forward with integrating sustainability, strategic, cohesive actions aligned with global sustainability standards will ensure meaningful, long-term success.
