enHow Parents Can Spark Curiosity and Raise Engaged Learners
http://www.gesseducation.com/gess-talks/articles/how-parents-can-spark-curiosity-and-raise-engaged-learners

For busy parents supporting children across the Middle East, often balancing school expectations, screens, and packed schedules, childhood curiosity can quietly fade into compliance. The challenge isn’t a lack of ability; it’s that natural question-asking and exploration get treated as distractions instead of the starting point for learning. When curiosity is protected at home, it becomes the engine behind self-motivated learning, helping children stay focused, take healthy risks, and keep going when work feels hard. The payoff is simple and lasting: engaged learners with strong lifelong learning habits.

Understanding Curiosity-Driven Motivation

At the heart of engaged learning is intrinsic motivation, meaning a child learns because they are enjoying the activity itself and feels capable of growing. Curiosity-driven learning feeds that inner drive by giving children choice, purpose, and steady encouragement, then turning their questions into small, doable next steps. A simple “learning log” helps you capture those questions fast, and a page-insertion document workflow, using an online tool for inserting pages when you need to update a PDF, keeps new notes organized without creating more work.

For education professionals tracking learning trends, this matters because it builds learners who persist without constant prompting. Research shows growth mindset often works through effort, with its influence channeled through perseverance of effort (β = 0.23), which is exactly what curiosity can activate at home.

Picture a parent sharing a weekly “wonder list” with a teacher: Why do boats float? How do we recycle paper? Each question becomes one inserted page with a quick plan, materials, and a child reflection, creating a living portfolio schools can understand.

Set Up a Learning-Ready Home in 30 Minutes

A learning-rich environment doesn’t need a spare room or a big budget. In half an hour, you can create a simple home learning setup that makes curiosity easy to follow, so your child’s questions feel like invitations, not extra homework.

Create one “Yes Space” for learning: Choose a small corner (a mat, low shelf, or even one basket) where it’s always okay to touch, open, build, and ask. Keep it uncluttered: 10–15 items max so children can see choices and decide independently, which supports intrinsic motivation. Add a notebook nearby for your quick “learning log” so you can capture questions as they happen.

Put books within reach, and rotate, don’t overstock: Place 8–12 books for children at eye level (on a low shelf, in a crate, or on a coffee table). Rotate weekly by swapping a few titles rather than buying more; this keeps novelty high while staying manageable. Evidence on home literacy activities reinforces why making reading materials visible and routine-friendly matters.

Set up a “builder box” of educational toys: Aim for open-ended educational toys that grow with your child: interlocking blocks, counting pieces, shape tiles, a simple board game, or any construction kit. Keep them in one labeled container and limit to 2–3 categories so cleanup is simple and choice stays child-led. Even a few items, like mathlink cubes, can spark longer “I wonder what happens if…” play.

Make a “create-anything” art tray (with boundaries): Use one tray or pouch with 6–8 creative exploration resources: blank paper, sticky notes, crayons, scissors, tape, glue stick, and a recycled-material envelope (caps, boxes, fabric scraps). Post two simple rules: “Materials stay on the tray” and “Show me your plan before using tape/glue.” The boundaries protect your home while still giving real autonomy.

Add a hands-on learning materials drawer for quick experiments: Stock one small drawer with safe, everyday items: measuring cups, string, magnets, a flashlight, a dropper, and a small tub for water. Place a “question card” on top: “What do you notice? What could you change?” When a curiosity pops up, you can respond with, “Let’s test it,” then write the question in your learning log.

Use a 3-label system to keep it child-led: Label containers Build, Read, Create and teach a 2-minute reset routine: pick one activity, work, then return items before switching. This simple structure supports follow-through without turning play into pressure, and it makes it easier to repeat learning moments consistently throughout the week.

Q: How can I create a home environment that consistently encourages my child's natural curiosity?
A: Set up “yes spaces” where exploring is allowed, like a drawer of safe materials, a reading corner, and a question board. Keep prompts visible: “What do you notice?” and “What else could be true?” When attention dips, remember the average attention span is limited, so plan short, frequent curiosity moments rather than long sessions.

Q: What are effective ways to notice when my child feels overwhelmed or stuck in their learning journey?
A: Look for changes in pace and mood: rushing, avoiding, irritability, or saying “I can’t” quickly. Use a simple check-in: “Is this too easy, too hard, or unclear?” Then reduce the load by narrowing the task to one step or offering two choices.

Q: How do I balance guiding my child without taking away their motivation to explore independently?
A: Coach the process, not the answer: model how to ask, test, and revise. Offer a menu of options and let your child pick the path, then agree on a short timebox to try it. This preserves agency while still providing structure and emotional safety.

Q: What strategies can help me celebrate small successes to keep my child motivated without creating pressure?
A: Praise what they did, not who they are: “You kept trying different ideas,” “You asked a clearer question.” Track tiny wins in a weekly note or photo so progress feels real. Consistent support matters, and children with actively involved parents often build stronger confidence and motivation.

Q: How can nontraditional students manage the challenges of balancing academic, personal, and family responsibilities to support their own learning success?
A: Treat learning like a shared system: pick two fixed study windows, pre-decide what “good enough” looks like, and communicate boundaries early. Break coursework into micro-tasks and keep one simple tracker for deadlines and next actions. Many adult learners follow through better with structured support, such as a weekly planning reset and an accountability check-in, and academic support for adult learners can be part of that structure.

Start One Weekly Ritual That Keeps Curiosity Alive at Home

Many parents want to motivate children and nurture a love of learning, but busy schedules and overwhelm can make consistency feel out of reach. The steady path is a simple mindset: build engaged parenting practices through small, repeatable rituals backed by parental encouragement and realistic expectations. Over time, that commitment to learning support reduces daily friction and helps children feel safe to ask, explore, and persist, key ingredients in developing lifelong learners. Curiosity grows when support is consistent, not complicated. Choose one curiosity ritual to start this week and repeat it on the same day, then notice and celebrate one small win. This is how families and school communities strengthen resilience, connection, and long-term learning confidence.

http://www.gesseducation.com/gess-talks/articles/online-tutoring-vs-person-tutoring-what-are-benefits

Online vs In-person Tutoring: What’s the Difference?

Online and face-to-face tutoring are basically different ways of delivering lessons to students. Let’s take a look at the primary differences between the two:

Online Tutoring

Online tutoring involves utilising the benefits of video conferencing to connect tutors and students remotely. Teaching can be carried out via presentations, messaging apps, interactive online games, videos, and more.

Face-to-face Tutoring

In-person tutoring means a tutor sits down face-to-face with a student. This can be done in any environment that facilitates learning such as a school, the tutor or student’s home, or the local library (to list a few examples).

Tuition (whether online or in-person) isn’t just for school students. Tutoring can be taken up by people from all walks of life; whether you’re looking for online tutoring for university students, hoping to skill up at work, or aiming to get into a particular school, tutoring is for everyone.

How much can you charge as a tutor?

Most tutors are hired and paid for privately. As such, the fees aren’t always cheap. Depending on the subject, typical tuition rates are around £20-£20 per hour, whether online or in-person.

The good news is that paying for private tutoring is easier than ever. With digital wallets and online payments widely used, tutors can now accept payments with ease. What’s more, many tutors are happy to discuss alternative payment options with their students to help spread the cost.

So, if the thought of £20-£30 per hour makes your eyes water, it’s worth discussing alternate options with your tutor to see if you can work out a payment plan that is agreeable to both parties.

Now, let’s take a closer look at online and in-person tutoring and discuss the benefits of each.

The Benefits of Online Tutoring

Online tutoring is becoming increasingly popular among UK students and when you take a look at the benefits you’ll understand why.

Convenient

One of the major benefits of online tutors and their services is the convenience they offer. With online tutoring via , there is no need to commute to attend a tutoring session in-person. All you need is a computer and the ability to video chat with your tutor. This can save a lot of time (and cost) and also means you’re able to learn in a comfortable, familiar environment where you feel relaxed and able to absorb information more easily.

Accessible

Unfortunately, tutoring isn’t always accessible to those who need it. For example, many adults are looking for tutoring but are unable to attend in-person as their working hours clash with the tutor’s schedule. What’s more, some students need the extra support but cannot afford the commute and therefore are unable to attend in-person sessions. Online tutoring is breaking down learning barriers and making it accessible to everyone. All you need is a computer and if you don’t have a computer, the library is an excellent free resource where you can use a computer for free. Online tutoring has opened up learning opportunities for people from all walks of life.

Flexible

Another significant benefit of remote tutoring is the flexibility it offers. Whether you’re in school, working, caring for children or relatives, or are busy in other ways, it can be hard to find tutoring services that fit your schedule.

Remote tutoring lets you select a tutor who fits your schedule requirements. So, whether you’re looking for tutoring outside of work hours, on your lunch break, or on the weekends, you’re bound to find someone who fits the bill.

Cost-effective

While the upfront cost of remote tutoring may not look any different from in-person tutoring (depending on the provider), it is more cost-effective.

This is because it eliminates the need for commuting and the consequent travel expenses. Depending on the amount of tutoring you’re signing up for, these savings can be quite significant in the long run.

The Benefits of Face-to-face

Tutoring Whether you had help back in school or your parents tutored you on the weekends, it’s fair to say we’re all familiar with the concept of face-to-face tutoring.

So, let’s take a look at some of the benefits.

Personal Connection

One of the most important benefits of face-to-face learning is the opportunity to establish a personal connection between students and tutors. Face-to-face communication is so important. It helps establish more long-lasting relationships and allows students to feel more comfortable and connected with their tutor.

Accommodate Learning Styles

Everyone learns differently. In fact, there are seven different learning styles that most people fall into:

1. Visual

2. Aural

3. Kinesthetic

4. Social

5. Logical

6. Verbal

7. Solitary

The great benefit of face-to-face tutoring is that it can accommodate all learning styles.

So, if a student needs teaching aids or visual demonstrations (for example), the tutor can provide this. Face-to-face tutoring accommodates all kinds of learning styles and helps students understand what they’re being taught and retain the information for longer.

Improved Focus

While we have adjusted to remote and hybrid working (for the most part), it’s fair to say that working from home does have its distractions. And the same can be said for learning from home, too.

Face-to-face tutoring offers the benefit of improved focus. This is because it requires the student to travel to a designated learning location, establish a healthy routine, and maximise study time. For many people this provides a much-needed break from the distractions at home and allows for learning to occur in a structured environment.

Social Interaction

For many people, the draw of in-person tutoring is the social interaction it offers. Studying can be an isolating experience for many students and it’s easy to feel disconnected from other people. In-person learning offers the chance to interact socially with someone else and receive face-to-face tutoring support. It keeps you accountable, lets you externally process information, and offers up someone who can serve as a mentor throughout your learning journey.

How Do I Choose the Right Tutoring Method for Me?

You may be asking yourself that very question. And we hope that by highlighting the benefits of both online and in-person tutoring, we have provided you with some guidance.

We recommend making a list of what’s important to you. For example:

Do you need a designated workspace?

Do you want social interaction?

Are you willing to commute?

By asking yourself these questions (and more), you can start building an idea of what your tutoring needs look like and make your decision more easily.

Finally, it’s important to seek out highly qualified and experienced online tutors who can provide the support you need. Therefore, you should always seek out reputable in-person and virtual tutors with an excellent track record and numerous positive reviews from their past and existing students.

Final Words

Tutoring is a valuable tool allowing individuals to further their education at any age or stage of life. We hope this article has helped highlight the benefits of online and in-person tutoring and supported you in finding the right fit for your needs.

http://www.gesseducation.com/gess-talks/articles/virtual-and-person-education-%E2%80%93-will-students-soon-be-able-choose

Is it time to move away from our group-of-students-in-a-class style of education? In the face of changing times and expectations, the sands are shifting under education systems worldwide.

For a long time now, educating 20-30 students in a classroom has been the norm, regardless of the differences between individual students. Teaching everyone the same thing at once has meant that students can be tested on their knowledge simultaneously, making it convenient for schools, society and employers to see where individuals will fit into the workplace once their studies end.

This works perfectly for some students, but it certainly does not work for all. Everyone learns differently. It’s not a modern phenomenon; the only difference is that previously we’ve always been able to brush over the cracks. Today, however, after the upheaval of the pandemic, those cracks have become chasms. Students are staying away from school in record numbers, in turn, prompting changes in education provision that, some may say, have been long overdue.

What has changed?

Student attendance rates right across the world are the worst they have ever been as more and more young people struggle with their social, emotional and mental health and other issues.

Attitudes have also changed. Going to school in person isn’t regarded as essential as it was pre-pandemic because, at that time, students could learn online – and the current thinking is, ‘If it was OK then, why not now?’ Add to that the number of parents working more flexibly, splitting their time between working in the office and at home; they may now be closer to their child’s struggle to attend school day after day. No wonder they are seriously questioning whether that education model is the right fit.

Education provision shakeup?

From a parent’s point of view, the conversation about whether their child could have a different kind of education suddenly makes more sense. Working from home means it has become a much more viable prospect for them to be on hand to support their child’s online learning.

If that thinking is indeed the case, and the market demands it, then we could be at the point of significant diversification in education provision; a split between in-person and online schools. This is the situation today:

• Physical schools – Many students and parents believe the in-person model is broken. Curriculum pressures are high; the mix of students in a class may affect other students’ learning; social issues amongst students can be hugely problematic, affecting mental health and wellbeing – and that experience day after day can take its toll.

Many parents believe school systems are stuck in an outdated loop and need to change their model to be more inclusive, meaning a less structured, less rigid, potentially hybrid way to engage in learning but at the same time not being something that's too claustrophobic.

• Online schools – It’s a fact: more virtual schools are appearing around the world, such as Cambridge Home School Online, The Online School and Crimson Global Academy. Most are currently only accessible to the parents who can pay but that could change in future if the demand is high enough. In time, that demand may also come from staff if they gain a position in a virtual school and then find they prefer to teach in that environment.s are stuck in an outdated loop and need to change their model to be more inclusive, meaning a less structured, less rigid, potentially hybrid way to engage in learning but at the same time not being something that's too claustrophobic.

Times are changing

As time progresses, hybrid and virtual schools that are potentially more inclusive will become increasingly relevant, particularly as technology makes the ability to interact, learn and engage remotely easier than ever.

That may not be a popular view. For in-person school principals, the argument will be that nothing less than turning up to learn in person will do. However, the head of a virtual school may beg to differ, pointing to the advantages of more focused learning and better wellbeing.

Ultimately, it’s not a case of one argument winning out over the other – as we said at the start: one size does not fit all. If change is driven by learners’ diverse needs, we can only surmise that all the pathways are relevant. In that case, we must ensure that if education systems are to offer choice, then all providers are consistent, credible and effective in what they offer.

The clock is ticking

Education authorities and bricks-and-mortar schools need to take a hard look their provision. Much has changed during the last few years.

Sticking our heads in the sand, doing the same we have always done and lamenting the outcomes will not change anything. We missed the great collective reset the pandemic offered us and instead catapulted stressed, socially deprived, traumatised and bereaved students straight back into ‘catching up’. The world has changed. Social norms have changed. Students have changed. Education must now adapt.

http://www.gesseducation.com/gess-talks/articles/how-technology-can-reshape-education-better-student-outcomes

As the immediate impact of the pandemic recedes, we have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to reimagine education in a post-COVID world. We can take the hard-won lessons from the pandemic, with online learning and hybrid education models, and use these learnings to reboot education systems so that they better serve our children and protect their future.

Christine Muhigana of UNICEF summed it up succinctly when she commented that, “The COVID-19 pandemic has fast-forwarded global education thinking on how to transform and strengthen education systems through technology that complements skilled and well-supported teachers, so that every child receives quality and inclusive learning.”

What have we learned?

As we introduce more technology into classrooms, we need to ensure that teachers are well prepared and trained to be able to reimagine how learning and teaching take place. The aim for technology is that it should underpin great classroom practice, and seamlessly integrate so that it becomes and enabler, not the focus. Technology won’t replace good teachers. Instead, it can help then not only with the knowledge acquisition journey their learners need to make, but also enhance skills acquisition. Skills such as collaboration, critical thinking, resilience, and agility, which together with digital literacy, are necessary for them to be able to become active contributors to the global digital economy.

Hybrid and blended learning pedagogical models combine the best of in-school and remote learning, with digital engagement. But these models are more than just a quick fix for disrupted learning. They are ways in which we can enhance and accelerate learning by providing student-centred approaches to meet diverse learners’ needs. That’s why at Microsoft, our aim is to empower educators and students to teach and learn with technology through doing and exploring. In other words, enquiry-based active learning. For educators, clear educational transformation plans will be mission-critical to help to solidify the technology competency gains made during the pandemic.

At Microsoft, we believe that technology, applied in new ways can shift behaviour and motivation, enabling educators to assess learning in new ways and supporting students as they learn to be adaptable and resilient through exploration, simulation, and gaming. The goal is to encourage students to learn through doing – solving problems, practicing, progressing, and having fun, with real-time feedback from educators. This can lead to much deeper knowledge retention and more than this, support students to show what they can do with what they’ve learned.

http://www.gesseducation.com/gess-talks/articles/do-your-students-have-confidence-keep-themselves-safe-online

While much of it may be innate, knowing the key components that we can work on is invaluable – and many of today’s students are lucky enough to learn about them in school.

Self-confidence is much more than being brave enough to stand up in front of the class and speak, perform a role in the school play in front of parents, or sing a solo in a school concert. It’s about having the self-belief to speak out and share ideas or concerns and, crucially, be able to express them in a way that people will take them seriously. Having a well-developed sense of self helps us to navigate through life, empathise, get on with others, stand up for our values and act responsibly. And when we have the skills to trust our own values and judgements, self-confidence, self-belief and self-esteem build.

Modelling and embedding approaches to building self-confidence

Learning positive social behaviours has both individual and group benefits. Many students are lucky enough to be able to absorb these traits at home from the examples modelled by their parents/carers, but unfortunately, that’s not the case for others, which is why it’s so important that students experience social-emotional learning in school.

Small gestures and comments are really effective and it can start with something as simple as teachers giving positive feedback about a student’s actions, character or achievements. This can be especially encouraging for those who are rarely praised at home. It can lead to greater motivation and engagement, as well as improving attainment – and all from a teacher’s kind, considered and carefully chosen words. Furthermore, the benefit of praising something about an individual that is unique to them can help them start to believe in their self-worth outside of school, too.

Self-confidence can be further fostered in schools where there is a focus on oracy. A strand that runs throughout every subject of the curriculum, oracy skills help students gain the confidence to speak out, enabling them to better engage with others and express their own ideas and views. There are positive impacts for students’ engagement and progress – and, recognising this, schools across Dubai are increasingly seeing the benefits of incorporating it into their lessons to help students further develop their confidence and belief in themselves.

Fri, 12 Jul 2024 10:33:06 +0000Feedimporter12968 at http://www.gesseducation.comIs Blended Learning Here to Stay?
http://www.gesseducation.com/gess-talks/articles/blended-learning-here-stay

But this is just the start. In 2021, schools alternated between in-person and online learning, blended or hybrid classrooms, or a mix of the various teaching modalities.

During the epidemic, schools did the best they could with the resources they had, including government funds dedicated to supporting hybrid learning, the patience of family and caregivers, and the inventiveness and endurance of teachers all over the world.

The reform of the education sector has a lot riding on it, not least the hopes of students and instructors who have already had their digital abilities tested. While everyone wants to go back to school, blended learning helps to build a more resilient education system by allowing for more personalization of learning while also increasing accessibility.

Flexibility, scalability, and agility are critical as IT executives aim to build on their transformative success while also providing longer-term advantages and supporting a digital environment appropriate for the future.

What is blended learning?

Blended Learning has, in fact, been the solution for many students for several years. Blending learning as a concept and learning style has been around since before the turn of the century, going by titles including "hybrid learning," "technology-mediated education," "web-enhanced training," and "mixed-mode instruction."

While definitions differ, most agree that blended learning, as its various names imply, is a hybrid learning style in which face-to-face education is coupled with technology-mediated training throughout the course of a course or module.

So, what are the effects of online learning and hybrid classrooms on students? What about teachers?

Many people are concerned about how effectively children learn online and the impact on educators of having to support both in-person and virtual learning at the same time. Others, on the other hand, have witnessed directly how beneficial online learning can be, and students are prospering as a result of the advantages of a hybrid learning environment.

Students who require extra time for specific assignments owing to learning difficulties or who require unique tools or equipment to succeed in the classroom, for example, can get what they need on their own time. Others choose project-based learning or gaming, both of which have grown in popularity in the hybrid learning period.

Is hybrid learning a viable option?

According to a review of the research on hybrid and blended learning, hybrid learning boosted student involvement, success, and a favorable perspective of the learning process.

These tried-and-true ways of student involvement are also included in hybrid learning:

Personalized learning has been found to increase students' math and to read scores, and it is easier to implement in hybrid classrooms.

Students' communication abilities improve as a result of blended learning.

Personalized attention

Teachers are able to devote more time to one-on-one face contact with each of their pupils by utilizing digital technology to save time when it comes to basic education. Teachers can also automate tailored feedback on a bigger scale by utilizing the processing capacity of internet technologies.
