Edalex Edtech company

Victoria EdTech Summit: Meet the exhibitors - Edalex

Edalex develops technology solutions that extract hidden value from educational data to make it accessible and more meaningful.

Tell us about the company

Founded in 2016, Edalex develops technology solutions that extract hidden value from educational data to make it accessible and more meaningful.

Credentialate is our newest product. It was informed by a multi-year research project at the University of New South Wales, where Edalex was the industry partner. Credentialate is a Credential Evidence platform. We unlock learner achievement data from an institution's current systems and provide a personal evidence record for learners that can travel with their digital badge or other forms of credential recognition. For institutions we provide data insights and reporting from an atomic to macro level around skills and competency data.

openEQUELLA is a CODiE award-winning, open source platform that centrally houses teaching and learning, research, media and library content.  openEQUELLA has been deployed for copyright resource collections, research materials, managing and exposing materials through websites and portals, content authoring, workflow, institutional policy and organisational resources.  The platform is used by educational institutions globally, including universities, community colleges, TAFEs, K-12 departments, and corporate training providers.

What initiatives are you working on currently

Credentialate

  • Developing the best product to discover and share workplace skills from within an institutions own data ecosystem.
  • Investigating the wicked problem of evidence of learning existing in multiple places in multiple forms and how to align that evidence to skills, competencies or capabilities.
  • Providing the best tool for learners to share their PERSONAL skills and competencies to get a job or get a better job.
  • Investigating how AI can enhance the discovery and sharing of workplace skills
  • Aligning skills and competency data to frameworks.

openEQUELLA

  • Enhancing usability through an overhaul of openEQUELLA’s UI is Edalex’s current priority.  This initiative ensures end users (educators, trainers etc) maximise the value of the content available to them.
  • The openEQUELLA roadmap is 100% client-driven, ensuring that other initiatives pursued meet any unmet client needs.

What are the benefits for educational establishments using your product/s

Credentialate

  • Institutions can provide their learners with a machine readable and verified record of their personal skills and competencies as achieved via their learning journey.
  • We provide institutions with skills and competency reporting that gives transparency, insights and tracking of skills and competency data from the atomic (element) level all the way to the macro (institution wide) level.
  • We provide end to end management of the digital badging process, so institutions have visibility of not only those that have achieved mastery (and therefore have a digital badge) but those that did not achieve, and can therefore provide remediation.
  • We enable the unlocking of data from an institutions current platforms (ie LMS) to surface both domain specific and employability skills from within the curriculum.

openEQUELLA

  • Anywhere, anytime access to content.
  • Control over your own content: Content is often siloed within institutions, stored across many disparate systems - openEQUELLA is a central storage location for any digital content.
  • Ability to reuse and repurpose content, enabling institutions to maximise their investment in content development.
  • Support for open access initiatives, such as the storage of open educational resources.
  • Seamlessly integrates with other key platforms within an institution's ecosystem, such as the LMS, ensuring users can experience the benefits of a CMS without leaving the LMS.

What products/solutions are best suited for teachers/academics (schools or universities)? How will these products/solutions help educators become more effective?

Credentialate

  • Credentialate is valued wherever learning is occurring.
  • By unlocking the data in your current systems and giving transparency to skills and competency data for both the learner and the institution, we can help align learning outcomes to the needs of the labour market, and specific industry sectors.
  • Not all learners are the same, so why are their credentials? Learners and institutions need to have the ability to understand personal skills and competencies to navigate the increasingly crowded and dynamic global labour market.
  • The currency of the knowledge economy is data. The only way for institutions, and by default educators themselves, to be more effective is to understand the personal needs of their learners and help them get a job or get a better job.

openEQUELLA

  • openEQUELLA is used across all types of educational institutions.  It has been designed by educators, for educators.
  • Educators are typically time-poor, by having access to a central repository of resources, they can maximise their time through the reuse and repurposing of content.

How has the current pandemic affected how you operate / what have you had to change? What lessons did you learn?

Credentialate

  • The education market globally has been rocked by the pandemic and all institutions and learners have had to adapt to the online learning world rather rapidly.
  • In conjunction with the changes to where and how learning is taking place, globally there are significant changes happening at a workforce level. The skills gap is real and widening, which is providing challenges and opportunities for both formal/traditional learning institutions and informal/alternative education pathways.
  • Edalex with Credentialate has and is responding to both of these driving forces by working with our partners as they make transformational changes in the way they operate.
  • Our free pilot period allows institutions to test and incubate our solution in a period of budget uncertainty.
  • We have broadened our target market to encompass the changing nature of workforce development in the Corporate sector and to help bridge the gap between learning and earning.
  • As with everything in the world today, agility is the key. Listening carefully to our market and responding in a timely manner to their requirements for evidence-backed credentials. We have adjusted our internal processes accordingly.
  • Understanding we are a small but important part of the wider global challenges, and working together with partners to solve the wicked problems.

openEQUELLA

  • As an anytime, anywhere digital repository, openEQUELLA was perfectly suited to assist institutions with the transition to fully online learning.  That said, Edalex saw up to 6x increases in the usage statistics of clients.
  • For openEQUELLA users, we extended the number of versions of the platform that we supported, enabling institutions to focus on other emerging issues instead of needing to worry about system upgrades.
  • As all organisations did, Edalex reverted to fully online customer engagement.  An interesting lesson learnt from this was that it led to increased engagement as often client contacts are limited in attending f2f events due to budget, availability etc.

What do you think the top Edtech trends do you see emerging this year

  • Micro credentials, digital badges, verified credentials all to enhance learner agency.
  • Increased use of AI/machine learning in EdTech.
  • The continued rise of open access and open educational resources.
  • Personalised learning (whatever definition you place on that).
  • Increased sophistication in learning analytics.
  • Increased emphasis on social learning in the online environment.
