Chris Rogers earned first place in the 2026 Virtual Classroom Showcase from the New York State Association for Language Teachers (NYSAFLT).

NYSAFLT ranked world language educators from throughout the state based on classroom layout and learning spaces, organization and classroom management systems, daily routines and procedures, bulletin boards, displays, student work and technology integration.

This is the video Señor Rogers, a Spanish teacher at North Albany Middle School since 2023, submitted this video (Rogers' presentation begins at 3:01) to the contest about the importance of cultivating joy amongst his students. His goal is to create a space where language learning is about more than vocabulary and grammar but also about creating opportunities for connection, communication, community and belonging.

“The walls are not just decoration. They are another source of input that helps students communicate, connect and learn,” said Chris Rogers.

“My classroom is truly a labor of love, made possible through the support of my family, colleagues, friends, and students. I am deeply honored to accept this award and grateful for the recognition.”

Classroom instruction also includes Comprehensible Input (CI), students engage with Spanish in meaningful and authentic ways, developing confidence as they use the language to express themselves.

According to a statement from NYSAFLT, “The organization recognized Chris's classroom not simply for its visual appeal, but because the space tells a compelling story. His classroom demonstrates how thoughtful design can support communication, foster relationships, and create an environment where students genuinely want to participate and learn.”

“At the heart of Chris’ work is the belief that joy is essential to learning. Whether students are engaging in conversation, exploring culture, or collaborating with classmates, his goal remains constant: helping them discover the power of language while experiencing the joy of connection and belonging.”
