The Myth of Best Practice
“These theories don’t work in our context” – or so goes the common-sense received wisdom that is echoed in many school staffrooms, leadership meetings and professional development sessions across the globe.
Anyone who has worked in education for any length of time will have witnessed the same cycle. A leader or consultant introduced a research-based strategy, often presented as “best practice.” Then it is implemented with enthusiasm, supported with training, and aligned with school priorities. There may be a written policy to formalize it. Yet, over time, the expected impact does not materialize. In some cases, progress stalls; in others, outcomes appear to decline.
At this point, the fatigued staff tend to fall into two camps. Either the implementation is judged to have lacked fidelity, or the research itself is dismissed as being mere theories or not relevant to their specific context. Both explanations can contain some element of truth, but the real answer is often more nuanced.
The problem is not that research is inherently useless. The problem is that research is often misunderstood. That misunderstanding often divides into two equally problematic assumptions. Either research is the useless scribblings of an academic’s musings, or it is a miracle panacea that cures all educational ills.
While there is plenty of theoretical and conceptual research, most research labelled as “best practice” tends to be based on empirical findings. It demonstrates that a particular intervention led to improved outcomes in a specific setting. However, this does not mean that those same outcomes can be automatically reproduced elsewhere. This is not a problem with the research, but a fact of life. Schools are complex environments shaped by culture, student needs, language, curriculum, and teacher expertise. Even when contexts are similar, small differences can significantly affect outcomes.
The question is not whether a practice works, but under what conditions has it been shown to work, and how similar are those conditions to our own?
Beyond the fair test
Most educators will be familiar with the concepts of validity and reliability. In assessment, validity refers to measuring what we intend to measure, and reliability refers to obtaining consistent results. These concepts are central to the scientific method, where conditions are controlled in order to make replication possible. In many fields, particularly the physical sciences, strong validity and reliability contribute to the expectation that findings may be generalized to similar situations.
However, in educational settings with all the beauty of human variety, reproducing the same outcomes with the same interventions is far less realistic. Rarely will applying the same intervention in two different schools, or even in two different classes within the same school, result in exactly the same outcome. This does not make the research invalid, but it does highlight that even studies with strong validity and reliability may not be generalizable across contexts. The issue, therefore, is not about the quality of the research but the assumption that quality guarantees transfer.
From generalization to transferability
Many qualitative researchers like myself are less concerned with generalization and instead focus on the concept of trustworthiness. According to Lincoln and Guba, trustworthiness requires researchers to consider four things:
- Credibility – that the stated findings accurately reflect reality
- Transferability – that the context is richly and accurately described so that others can determine its relevance for their own context
- Dependability – that the process of research is consistent and auditable
- Confirmability – that the conclusions are derived from the data
For educators, this means that research does not automatically transfer from one context to another. It demands informed professional judgement. The researcher’s role is to provide a trustworthy account of the context and process. It is then the educator’s role to assess how far those conditions align with their own.
This turns research from a prescribed practice to a starting point with numerous possibilities.
The classroom as a laboratory
If the applicability of research depends on each context, educators need a structured way to introduce research-informed interventions in a way that is tailored to their needs. This is where the idea of the classroom as a laboratory becomes meaningful.
Rather than educators being implementers of external ideas, they become active inquirers who utilize their professional judgement to refine research-based approaches. This does not require all our staff to conduct formal publishable research, but it does require a structured approach to reap the most rewards.
A cycle of inquiry
This approach is closely aligned with action research and happens loosely in many classrooms. The process below can help make interventions informed by external evidence, while being contextualized for the specific setting:
Define the focus
Determine what exactly you are aiming to achieve. Which groups, which grades, which sub-groups? What will success look like and in what time frame?
Engage with research
Rather than trying something completely untested, draw on previous successful interventions.
Compare and adapt to context
What are the similarities between your context and the context of the study? Consider what might need to be adapted to make this intervention more successful.
Implement with fidelity
After planning the intervention, implement it intentionally while monitoring implementation. Fidelity of the adapted strategy is key for the next steps, as we can only assess the impact of an intervention if we truly implement it.
Gather evidence
Continuously collect multiple sources of data to measure the impact of the planned intervention.
Reflect and interpret
Analyze what is working, what is not, and the possible reasons for both.
Refine and repeat
Now that you have results from your own context, it is time to adjust the approach and either refine it or expand it to other groups.
Final thought
The concept of “best practice” is not inherently flawed, and the title of this piece is deliberately provocative. The point is that research does not provide a one-size-fits-all solution. It does provide a robust, proven starting point. It is the role of our educators to interpret research, adapt it, and apply it to the benefit of their learners.
